Why Take A Child IQ Test?
Intelligence tests are primarily used to identify a child's intellectual capabilities.
You may have information that suggests your child's learning capabilities are stronger than those of his or her classmates. A children's IQ test can provide documentation of your child's learning capacities, particularly if there is evidence that your child could benefit from a more challenging curriculum. Or there may be information that suggests your child has a learning problem, which is another scenario that could open the door to testing.
If there are educational benefits that are available only to children who demonstrate capabilities through testing, you may want to consider a kids IQ test.
IQ tests for kids can score abstract reasoning, logical and mathematical skills, visual-spatial capabilities, and linguistic and perceptual aptitudes. These tests do not measure all types of intelligence.
Types Of Child IQ Tests
Two tests -- the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Third Edition), and the Stanford Binet Intelligence Test (Fourth Edition) -- are used for school-aged children.
The age range of the Wechsler test is 6 1/2 years to 16 1/2 years. Subtests measure verbal abilities including vocabulary and comprehension, among others. Subtests also measure nonverbal aptitudes such as picture arrangement, object assembly and block design.
The age range of the Stanford Binet test is from two years to adulthood. Subtests include both verbal and non-verbal abilities.
A kids IQ test measures various capabilities.
An abstract reasoning test can show basic mental ability, suggesting how the child learns and uses new concepts. A logical-mathematical test can reveal strength in counting, classifying and analyzing.
A perceptual test can make highlight a child's ability to determine similarities in words and objects. Linguistic tests can show preference and ability for reading and writing. Visual-spatial tests can disclose a talent for visual images, particularly with art.
Can A Child IQ Test Help Predict Your Child's Career?
IQ test scores for children can be used to help predict careers or jobs that a child would be suited for, though a child may show facilities for one kind of career and for various reasons, prefer and choose another as an adult. Generally, IQ test scores are thought to relate to the following professions:
90 - 100: Custodian, nurses' aide, factory worker, laborer
100-110: File clerk, truck drivers, shipping clerk, carpenter, mail clerk, telephone operator, metal worker
110-120: Accounting clerk, sales representative, bookkeeper, electrician, teller, plumber
